Sailing In The Scottish Highlands

In the Scottish Highlands you can charter a vessel or, of course, sail on up in your own boat.  A variety of options exist for taking sailing lessons and for hiring a boat.  If you’d just like a few hours in the loch, small sailing vessels and sailing tuition can be found on several of the larger Highland lochs.

Kushi Adventures operates out of Inverness and they provide sailing trips leaving from Cromarty on the Black Isle, heading out into the Cromarty Firth and beyond.  Lagganlia Centre near Kingussie charters a variety of sailing boats for use on Loch Morlich.  Here you can sail around the loch with the beautiful Cairngorms as your backdrop, either on your own or with an instructor.  Legend Sailing is part of the Loch Tay Activity Centre and they offer several sailing options on beautiful Loch Tay.  You can hire a dinghy or keelboat, take sailing lessons, or go for a skippered sailing cruise.  The Loch Insh Watersport and Activity Centre near Aviemore run many types of sailing courses, and they cater for all age levels.  Children as young as 6 are welcome to learn sailing at Loch Insh.  Courses last anywhere from an hour or two, to a two day course which will get you an RYA Level 1 certificate, a five day course which will get you a Level 2 certificate, and advanced RYA courses.  They provide boat hire as well as courses, but you must prove that you are capable of handling the boat before they will let you take it out.  They have 11 types of sailing vessels with capacities for up to 8 people.

New Horizon Sailing out of Oban offers sailing instruction, but they also run sailing holidays around the Western Isles.  Here you have the chance to explore the inlets, bays, and sea lochs.  You will see spectacular sights and have the chance to watch wildlife, while at the end of the day, you can moor in a secluded anchorage and enjoy a lovely and relaxing meal with other like-minded folk.  Yacht Corryvreckan is another provider of sailing holidays off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.  Beginners and experts alike are welcome on their sailing ventures and you will have the chance to learn the ropes while enjoying a magnificent holiday.
