Rock Climbing


The rugged and majestic Scottish Highlands are ideal for all forms of mountaineering.  The landscape is filled with hills and mountains and rugged terrain.  Some of the best rock climbing in the world is to be had in the Highlands of Scotland.  Whether you are a complete novice or a very skilled and experienced climber, there are rock climbing expeditions that are perfect for you.  You can get out into the true Highland wilderness and really experience nature in a unique way when you are rock climbing.  Aside from the spectacular scenery and panoramic vistas, you will have the exhilaration and challenge of conquering a rock face and pushing your skills, growing as a rock climber. 

There are many outdoor and activity centres which offer rock climbing experiences.  This is an activity which is suitable for most age levels, as long as you have a basic level of fitness and are comfortable with the challenges offered.  Tuition is available for all skill levels, from beginner through advanced.  Rock climbing is essentially the act of going up a mountain, hill, or steep terrain.  Often you are using specific techniques and equipments to reach your summit.  Outdoor centres will have the equipment and training necessary for you to go on a rock climbing outing here in the Scottish Highlands.  Rock climbing is often billed as a course, because it is necessary to learn certain skills in order to pursue this sport safely.  The various outdoor and activity centres which offer rock climbing will let you know whether any experience is necessary and what the age limit is for their rock climbing activities.

Boots-n-Paddles is a centre out of Aviemore and Inverness which offers rock climbing.  Here you can learn the basics on their indoor walls, and if you are ready and willing, you can then head out for an outdoor rock climbing experience.  They will cater for your needs and skill level.  Craggan Outdoors in Grantown-on-Spey runs rock climbing activities for all levels.  They also start you out indoors, and then you progress to the real thing on one of the many nearby crags.  It’s all about learning the techniques and extending your own skills.  They will combine a 70-foot abseil with your rock climbing experience if you wish.  G2 in Aviemore offers rock climbing instruction from a half day to a full week, starting with your current skill level, even if you are a complete beginner, and building from there.  Their half day taster course will have you climbing a few nearby crags and abseiling back down again!  Snowgoose Mountain Centre near Fort William offers winter and summer climbing courses.  They combine rock climbing with scrambling, and in the winter, with winter mountain trekking. 

Rock climbing is a fantastic way to experience the beautiful and rugged mountains of the Scottish Highlands.  While not the highest in the world, they are some of the most challenging.  Ben Nevis is Britain’s highest mountain and is accessible from near Fort William.  Ben Wyvis, Ben Lomond, Canisp, and Suilven are just a few of the mountains you can explore via a rock climbing adventure.  Book through a reputable outdoor centre, and you will have all you need for a safe, fun, and challenging climbing activity. 

The Scottish Highlands probably contain some of the best climbing in the world from Glencoe, Ben Nevis (highest mountain in mainland Britain) Glen Nevis, The Cairngorm Range to name but a few places.

Rock climbing for all abilities is available including expert tuition if required and some excellent equipment shops.Whatever type or level of climbing you are interested in Scotland's Scottish Highlands is the place to be.

Rock climbing in the Scottish Highlands allows you to experience nature and feel connected to it in a very intimate way, you will be surrounded by the great outdoors and scaling the sheer rock faces can prove to be exhilarating.

This extreme sport is open to people of a basic fitness level and all ages, as long as you feel comfortable then the many experienced instructors in the Scottish Highlands will be able to teach you the fine art of rock scaling until you are confident and comfortable with a variety of faces.
