Loch Ness

Many come out in curiosity- will they be the ones to spot Nessie?

urquart_castle_and_loch_ness.jpgThe original story dates back to the 7th century when apparently St columba calmed the wild beast( Loch Ness monster)after it attacked a monk.Today the Loch Ness monster prevails in every tourist shop for miles around the loch and has become the main reason tourists visit this part of highland scotland.

At Drumnadrochits Loch Ness monster exhibition,one is offered films boat excursions,'Nessie shops',a life size model and almost any thing that can be related to the little green monster.

There is also a Loch Ness Lodge visitor centre with pratically all the above and even sonar scanning cruisers for the dedicated Nessie finder!

Travelling south bound from Drumnadrochit, you come across Urquhart castle, visited by most that stay in the area as it also happens to be the most frequently visited place by the Loch Ness monster!

Cruises leave Fort Augustus ,and travel north bound to provide a wonderful scenic route through Invermoriston along the 24 miles of loch that make up a good part of the body of the Caledonian canal(built from 1802-22).

Loch Ness is the largest fresh water loch in all of Europe is said to be appoximately228 deep and over 1.5 km wide and for those that enter the canal at Inverness they are able  to travel all the way across scotland to Fort William(a work of genius by Thomas Telford) through Loch Ness to Oich and Lochy by series of 28 lochs eight of which are at Banavie just to the west of Fort William aptly named Neptunes Staircase
