Loch Garten

Loch Garten is a large Highland freshwater loch near Boat of Garten, in the Strathspey area of the Cairngorms National Park, in Scotland. It is surrounded by the tall pine trees of the Abernethy Forest.
For lovers of wildlife Loch Garten in the Cairngorms National Park is an absolute paradise; Ospreys, capercaillies and red squirrel are just a few of the animals you can see in this glorious part of the Scottish Highlands. The osprey is of particular interest because it became extinct in the 20th century and it was only in 1954 when a breeding pair established itself at Loch Garten that they returned to Scotland. There is now an RSPB nature reserve, the Osprey Centre, which was set up to monitor the birds, preserve their habitat, and allow visitors to safely view the nest without disturbing the birds. A boardwalk leads from the visitor centre to a bird hide, allowing good access to safe vantage point for further observation.
Further birdwatching can be done in the mature Scots pine and birch forest that surrounds the Loch, including the localised Scottish Crossbill and Crested Tit.
Loch Garten is a wonderful place from which to explore the Cairngorms and the beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
