Child Friendly Restaurants

The beautiful Scottish Highlands welcome families traveling with children, and you will find a variety of child-friendly restaurants here in the Highlands.  These restaurants will offer children’s menus, high chairs and booster seats, and changing facilities.  There is no need to limit yourself to takeaways and chain restaurants in order to accommodate the restaurant needs of you and your family.  Highland hospitality is legendary, and that includes a warm, welcoming family atmosphere in many Scottish Highland restaurants.

Of course, chain restaurants tend to cater for families, and you will find a few of these in the Highlands of Scotland.  However, the northernmost McDonald’s is located in Inverness, as are the northernmost Premier Inn restaurants.  So, if you are travelling into the Northern Highlands, don’t look for chain restaurants—you won’t find any!

Nevertheless, there are some lovely restaurant options for those traveling with children in the Scottish Highlands.  There are pockets of tourism in the Highlands which cater especially for families and family activities.  You will find a wide choice in child-friendly dining in places like Aviemore, Fort William, Pitlochry, Perth, Oban, Grantown-on-Spey, and of course, Inverness.  As well, there are some delightful family-run restaurants in the far north in Wick and Thurso, and just north of Inverness in Dingwall.  Roos Leap in Aviemore is an Australian-themed restaurant which offers a children’s section on its menu.  Free balloons and lollipops are standard items, and families are very welcome.  However, no children are served after 7:30 in the evening, so book early.  Reservations are recommended for this very popular family restaurant.  The Real Food Café, which is a roadside eatery near Crianlarich outside of Perth also offers a wide variety of healthy options for family dining, and a children’s menu.  The Tipsy Laird in Kingussie is, despite its name, a family-friendly restaurant that everyone will enjoy.  It is recommended that you book your table in advance, as this is a very popular place.

Inverness, the Capitol of the Highlands, has several child-friendly restaurants all offering something for every member of the family.  Bella Italia is an excellent, reasonably-priced Italian restaurant in Inverness.  It also provides a children’s menu, child-friendly favourites like pizza and spaghetti, and an activity pack for each child.  There is also a Pizza Express in Inverness for the die-hard pizza fan.  For American-style dining in the heart of Inverness, try the Filling Station.  It has a children’s menu and serves food all day.  If the family is in the mood for Chinese food, then the Gathering Place or Jimmy Chung’s is the place to eat.  The Snow Goose in the Stonyfield section of Inverness is a lovely, traditional style restaurant with Highland décor and snug rooms.  Children are welcome and have their own menu to choose from.

North of Inverness, you will find things spread out a bit more.  The restaurant at Falls of Shin in Lairg, sometimes referred to as the “Harrods of the North,” because of its ownership by Mr Al Fayed (who, incidentally, can be seen displayed in wax, courtesy of Madam Tussaud), is extremely family-friendly and offers a wide variety of mouthwatering local specialties, including ice cream and baked goods.  The grounds at Falls of Shin also contain an Adventure Playground, a view of the salmon leap, nature trails, and a large gift shop.  Falls of Shin, along the River Shin, is located in the heart of the northern Highlands, in the county of Sutherland.  It makes a perfect day out for the whole family.  If you travel as far north as Thurso, be sure to visit the Tempest Café for your breakfast or lunch.  It’s warm, friendly atmosphere and home-style cooking is perfect for families.

Wherever you travel in the Scottish Highlands, you will find a variety of child-friendly restaurants to make your family dining experience one that is relaxed and enjoyable.  While the Scottish Highlands are generally viewed as remote and isolated, they are up-to-date with restaurant and accommodation facilities, so no fear of your holiday experiencing a glitch due to any lack.  Bring your whole family to the awe-inspiring yet charming Scottish Highlands and experience Highland hospitality at its best in any one of a wide variety child-friendly eating establishments.  Remember to check if booking is required!
