A RECENTLY discovered time capsule sealed over 20 years ago has been found in Wick.

Now the John O’Groat Journal is looking for the answers to what lies in the steel locked box.

Local authority workers found the link to 1989 in the tower of the town hall in Bridge Street.

Already one member of the public has come forward to reveal their contribution and it is hoped more people will soon shed light on the contents.

The Highland Council’s local ward manager, David Sutherland, said it appears to have been part of the quatercentenary celebrations of the town’s founding and is not due to be opened for another 77 years.

"Obviously back in the quatercentenary year – 1989 – it was filled up with stuff and then stored in the town hall. The keyhole has been sealed up but we’re going to find a new home for it."

He added: "We’re looking after it carefully so it doesn’t go missing."

The black steel lock box is marked in red paint with the words "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL YEAR 2089".

The piece of local history has been stored in the Highland Council’s safe above the service point in Market Place.
