The Big Draw

Posted on Monday, 25 October 2010 06:28AM by Highlands news
October has been Big Draw month, and hundreds of venues in the UK and around the world have been taking part.  The Scottish Highlands are no exception, and the Pier to Pier event took place earlier this month, joining Ullapool and Stornoway in a huge drawing exhibition.  The Big Draw is an international festival and part of The Campaign for Drawing, whose goal it is to recognise drawing as a vehicle for creativity, thought, and social and cultural engagement.  The Campaign for Drawing was launched in 2000 by the Guild of St George and has since grown to worldwide proportions.  The Campaign says the program will be over when the words, “I can’t draw” are eliminated from our vocabulary.

The Big Draw is an ideal event for the Scottish Highlands, where the geography contributes to isolation and remoteness.  The Scottish Highlands have become particularly adept in recent years at joining together and creating innovative ways to grow and develop as a unique and distinctive region.  Some of the country’s best artists and musicians, writers and chefs live in the Scottish Highlands, and they are active in liaising with one another and bringing culture to the area.  Get out this weekend and see if you can view the evidence of The Big Draw, especially in Stornoway and Ullapool.
