News from The Galley of Lorne Inn, Ardfern, Argyll

Posted on Thursday, 15 November 2012 06:23AM by newsdesk
Our batteries are recharged for the winter season having managed to get away for a two week holiday with the children (that's the first since we've been here!) to The Outer Hebrides.

To anyone who hasn't been there, we thoroughly recommend it, especially North Uist, Harris and Lewis. It is truly amazing and the beaches are as good as the Caribbean only 20 degrees cooler! Nonetheless, we were very fortunate in that we hardly had any rain throughout the fortnight which made it all the more special. So if you're ever contemplating a holiday to the Outer Hebrides, just promise us one thing, break up your journey and spend a few nights at The Galley of Lorne Inn first. Then I can let you know how to make the most of your stay on these beautiful islands.

6 Years And Counting!
Next month sees us celebrate six years since arriving at The Galley of Lorne Inn and hopefully many of you will have seen the strides we have taken to turn this place into a very special small hotel.

In such difficult economics times, we should take a step back and pat ourselves and our staff on the back given what has been achieved over that time. Having virtually renovated everything from the guest rooms, the restaurant, general decor inside and out and behind the scenes, to receiving certificates of excellence from Tripadvisor for the past two years. We have been told we are now serving some of the best food in Argyll as opposed to the simple pub grub six years ago and alongside this we're breaking accommodation occupancy rates year on year. All this demonstrates our on-going desire to continue improving our facilities and the service we offer our customers, and we sincerely thank all of you for coming on that journey with us.

Planning Application Update
To those of you who are not aware, we do not own the land in front of The Galley of Lorne Inn between our boundary and Loch Craignish. This has been a constant thorn in our side since we came here. The person who currently owns this land is trying to build on it. The straightforward effect being that The Galley of Lorne Inn would not be a viable business if it were to happen. Many of our newsletter readership sent objection letters earlier this year against the planning application. Recently the application was withdrawn and so we received many emails and letters of congratulations. However, I'm afraid it is not good news.

We received a phone call from the Planning Department a couple of weeks ago. We were expecting them to tell us the date of the committee decision on the current application, but instead he informed us that Kanak Bose had withdrawn his application.

That was the good news, now for the bad !

He is now going to submit a new application (of which we have received notification from the applicant, not from the Planning Department as yet). We understand that it will be primarily the same design of houses and there will still be two. We understand that the gap between the two houses is to be widened in the belief that it will give us a better view and thus help with his application. As the house next to Watermell couldn't be moved anymore to the west, it can only suggest that the other house will be moved further to the east i.e. on the boundary with Craignish cottages. This of course means that there will still be no view whatsoever down the loch.

Furthermore to address the deficiencies in his previous application with respect to flood risk, both houses will increase in height making situation even worse.

Finally, the very bad news from our attempts to gain objections is that the revised application will be submitted under a new application number as opposed to modifying his existing application and therefore all written objections on the previous application will be void ! This is a very clever ploy on his part as he will be relying on the fact that the support gained from all over the UK and beyond from those who evidently cared about The Galley of Lorne Inn and supported us, will not perhaps be so inclined to go through the whole process again and resubmit letters of objection against the new application. We truly wish though that this will not be the case.

Unfortunately, it is by no means the end of the line. We're going to have to go through everything again from scratch. Of course we will keep you informed and be rest assured will be asking for your support again in the not too distant future.

Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA)
The Galley of Lorne Inn is selected for CAMRA's 40th Edition of The Good Beer Guide.

As many of you will know we are very passionate about our real ales and are most proud to announce that we have achieved our ultimate goal of being chosen to appear in CAMRA's 2013 Good Beer Guide.

In a letter from CAMRA it was stated that "out of over 50,000 pubs in Britain, only 4,500 of the finest outlets for real ale are chosen to be included in the Good Beer Guide 2013. It's a remarkable achievement for your pub to have earned a place in the guide and it speaks volumes for the quality of your beer that local CAMRA members have selected you for inclusion".

I guess I better have a pint to celebrate !

Calling All Photographers
As you'll know there's a panoramic vista around every corner in Argyll, so we're sure that many of you will have captured some wonderful images whilst you were here. We'd love to see them and possibly feature them in some of our promotional material (with your permission and a credit of course), so please do email them in to enquiries@galleyoflorne.co.uk.

We hope to see you back at the Galley soon!
