Gearing Up For Guy Fawkes

It’s that time again—when all across the Scottish Highlands you will soon witness bonfires burning brightly and fireworks lighting the night sky.  That’s right, it’s Guy Fawkes Night, or as it is more commonly known in the Highlands of Scotland, Bonfire Night.  Schools and community groups around the region are gearing up for bonfires and fireworks displays sure to please on Friday night, 5 November 2010.  Although everyone knows the historical tradition behind the bonfire and fireworks, remembering Guy Fawkes’ foiled plot against parliament and king, nowadays the event is more about community spirit and oftentimes fundraising for local schools.  

The Highland capital, Inverness, is planning a grand fireworks display at Bught Park as part of its Winter Festival.  Crowds are expected in excess of 10,000 and the event kicks off at 7:30 PM.  Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, will also be holding a spectacular fireworks display and lighting of the castle in a mock clan battle.  People of all ages will appreciate this unique way of celebrating Bonfire Night in the Scottish Highlands.  Food and drink will be available, and the event begins at 7:00 PM on Saturday, 6 November 2010.  Drumnadrochit will be holding its bonfire and fireworks on the 6th of November, as well.  Please check with local newspapers or the authorities for times and locations.
